Following Gonzalez’s tweet, many netizens criticized her for what they felt was a direct insult to the beauty queen.
“If you say that @MC_Gale whoever is she, is just saying her opinion, it's obviously not! She's insulting a person,” tweeted @claralovesyew.
“We should blacklist @MC_Gale in the Philippines, she doesn't have the right to call herself a Filipino!” said @IAmChrisGun.
Supsup also finished 2nd to Miss Venezuela's Vanessa Gonçalves in the online fan ranking with 7.0 of the global online votes.
Many Filipinos felt that the 25-year-old Supsup should have won, or at least placed higher than her 3rd runner-up finish, including beauty queens Ruffa Gutierrez, Lara Quigaman and Miriam Quiambao.
“I’m disappointed that PHILIPPINES didn’t place higher but nevertheless Shamcey did an excellent job in representing our country! BRAVO!!” tweeted Gutierrez.
“Congratulations Shamcey! 3rd runner up! A place higher last year…Were proud of you! Ikaw pa rin winner ko! Mabuhay ang Pilipinas!” said Quigaman.
Even Senator Miriam Defensor-Santiago chimed in, saying she would protest the results of the pageant if she had her way.
Santiago had described the Miss Philippines bet as an "ideal candidate (who) represented the best of the Filipina."
Miss Angola's Leila Lopes was crowned Miss Universe 2011.
