The Philippine “Volcanoes” national rugby team was considered this year’s rookie but they made it to the finals of the 2011 Asian Men’s Rugby Championships.
The Philippine Volcanoes have beaten the odds and bagged the silver medal at the recently concluded 2011 Asian Men’s Rugby 7s Championships held at the Likas Stadium in Kota Kinabalu, Sabah, Malaysia.
Now ranked no. 7 in Asia, the Philippine Volcanoes were able to beat powerhouse China and reached their first ever Cup final. It was the very first time that the Philippine team has trumped the Chinese nationals and it was considered a major upset at this year’s meet.
The Philippine team, en route to the finals, had also beaten Kazakhstan, the United Arab Emirates, and host country Malaysia.
In the finals, top team Japan has defended their title after beating the Philippine Volcanoes. But for the Philippine National Rugby team, it feels like they’ve won because beating China and facing Asia’s top rugby team in the finals are already beyond their expectations.
Philippine Volcanoes coach Mat Cullen said “We had set a goal of reaching the last four in the tournament . We have now set a few records. We beat China for the first time and by entering the final we have put Philippine rugby on the map. Finishing second to a team like Japan is an honor. It is way beyond our expectations.”
Unlike the Smart Gilas Pilipinas team who failed to advance to the Olympic qualifier yesterday, the Philippine Volcanoes is now on track to compete next March at the Olympic level in the world renowned Hong Kong 7s.
Below are the names of the Philippine Volcanoes members:

PHILIPPINE VOLCANOES Spill Facts You Must Know About MEN
There's another team of hot athletes competing with the Azkals for your attention: the Philippine Volcanoes. If you didn't already know, they're our national rugby team, and they are fast becoming the talk of the town. Like the Azkals, many of the Volcanoes are half-breeds--Fil-Brits and Fil-Aussies--and they're super cute!
But, while they've only stepped into the showbiz spotlight recently (yes, we're thinking of those steamy Bench billboards), they've been on top of their game for some time now. They won gold in the 2005 Asian Games and silver in the 2007 Southeast Asian games. They've dominated their divisions at the Asian 5 Nations tournament (the highest level of Asian rugby), and emerged champions in Divisions 4, 3, and 2. Next year, the Volcanoes are well-placed to gain entry into the Asian Top Five, and from there to the World Cup of Rugby. These guys have really been putting Philippine sports on the globe!
And speaking of globe, Globe Telecom hosted a send-off lunch for the Volcanoes last August 24 at Legend Villas, before they left for the Men's Asian Football Rugby Union (ARFU) 7s held last August 27 in Shanghai, China. (The Volcanoes went on to defeat South Korea--the defending champs--the United Arab Emirates, and Thailand in those games. They finished seventh, overall!
To help you know these down-to-Earth, hunky athletes better, Cosmo asked them this one question: "What fact about men do you think girls don't but should know?"
Read on for their answers, then launch the gallery for more facts on and photos of the Volcanoes. We guarantee you will looove this team!
Jake Letts: "A guy fact [girls should know] is the saying 'Treat him mean, keep him keen!' That's what none of us boys will admit but everyone knows, and it's true."
Andrew Wolff: "We hurt as much as [girls] do. And we cry, too. I think you girls have already figured us out, one way or another. It's for guys to figure girls out. I think the day I understand girls completely, I'll be dead already."
Justin Coveney: "When guys want to say something, they're not going to say it the way that they're supposed to. Guys will use their hands; you've got to read their body language because they are terrible at actually saying things in words. So next time you and your man have a fight, read the body and eye language. I think you'll get the true message there."
Chris Everingham: "It's okay to come up to guys and say hello. There's nothing wrong with that and you don't have to be a snob. You can say hello, and if it starts to work out, you can always say, 'It's nice to meet you.' You don't have to think, 'If I talk to him we're going to have sex.' Just talk to him and see what it is. Have an enjoyable conversation like they used to do in the old days and see what happens. Most guys are really nice, you know...most guys."
Oliver Saunders: "Hmm... We like to cuddle."
Harry Morris: "There are so many! Okay, maybe it's the misconception that guys don't care about girls if they do not provide constant affection or continuous attention, all the time. It doesn't mean we don't care. It just means there is something else on our minds. Like, for us, we train a lot, and our girlfriends think we only focus on training. But, that's not the case at all. Without a girlfriend or a girl back home, without being in a stable relationship, [we] can't focus on the rest of [our] lives. So there,we do care."
(Harry came up to us later and said, "I've got a better fact for you! If a girl wants to know when a guy really cares, it's when he offers to cook for her.")
Kenny Stern: "We don't pay a lot of attention to little things. Girls are very finicky and notice details that we wouldn't think twice about. So, don't get mad at us if we forget something. It's not that we don't care; it's just that we don't think about it. We think about food and all that stuff..."
Mark Chatting: "The best way to a man's heart is through his stomach!"

Azkals Neil Etheridge, Simon Greatwich, Jason Sabio, and Anton del Rosario deny rape accusation
Rumor has been circulating that four members of the national football team, Philippine Azkals, were involved in "rape" incident.
In an information sent to PEP.ph (Philippine Entertainment Portal) and other media members, Azkals members Neil Etheridge (goalkeeper), Simon Greatwich (midfielder), Anton del Rosario (defender), and Jason Sabio (defender) were accused of raping a Filipina in the house of their team manager Dan Palami.
The information contained an unconfirmed e-mail report from Paul Weiler, a German national who introduced himself as a former consultant of Philippine Football Federation (PFF). He related the supposed incident to a reporter who wanted to confirm the rumor.
In the e-mail, Weiler said (published as is), "Players Anton del Rosario, Jason Sabio and especially Simon Greatwich were involved and recorded the incident also via video cam (Jason Sabio was the one holding camera). Neil Etheridge and his very best friend Simon Greatwich did rape the woman and it seems happened in a villa/house of general manager Dan Palami (who seems not know about what happened in his house and was not there). 'Master mind' of this sex violence idea seems Anton del Rosario .. so far I know he did not rape the woman but pushed the others to do it."
Weiler also claimed that his intention was to warn the authorities about the issue.
"I can not live w/ the hard facts that players raped a young Manila woman and that it will be 'okay' for everybody. I have the fear that this players (if no punishment happens) they will do it again and maybe serious Azkals players are also pressured by them.
"Luckily its from my point of view a very small group of the Azkals and the more as 90% of azkals players are very serious and have no intension to do such violent behaviours. I like the Azkals furtheron .. but it would be very piTy and unhealthy for the whole NT if such players can escape from their bad styles easily."
Weiler also reiterated, "For me i's very important that the issue handles careful and that unguilty players and the Azkals reputation will be not touched to much negative."
PEP tried to get in touch with Weiler through its Facebook account. However, the German coach still has not replied to our private message at press time.
AZKALS DENY ALLEGATIONS. Meanwhile, in a report published on ABS-CBN News website, the Azkals who were implicated in this controversy dsenied the allegations.
Jason Sabio said, "I've heard a lot of rumors and speculations, that this person (Weiler) is trying to get back at the team because we had a fallout while we were in Germany.
"I don't know the full story, they're all just rumors."
Simon Greatwich, on the other hand, is disappointed that people are trying to bring the team down.
In PEP's recent interview with Anton del Rosario, he said that their management is currently investigating the issue.
Meanwhile, team manager Dan Palami said in an interview with GMA News, "I can't take action if the only basis is the internet. It's unfortunate that the boys have to face a controversy like this, but our main focus remains on our game vs. Kuwait."
The PHL Azkals will leave the country on July 14 for Bahrain, where they will have a one-week training prior to the first leg of their match against Kuwait on July 23.
PEP is open to publish the reactions of all the personalities implicated on this issue.
