Pinay not raped in Dubai prison: Consulate General

MANILA, Philippines – The Philippine Consulate General in Dubai has denied reports that an overseas Filipino worker (OFW) was raped inside a Dubai jail.
Consulate representatives visited “Cristy” at the Al-Muraqqabat prison on Wednesday.
The OFW was unaware about the alleged information that her mother provided to media. She also denied having told her mother about any rape inside the prison.
Earlier this week, her mother Nena told ABS-CBN News that she received a call from Cristy, telling her about the alleged rapes while in prison.
According to her mother, Cristy was on her way to send money when she was robbed. She went to the police to report the incident but the language barrier became a problem and she was instead arrested.
“Sabi po niya siya raw po ay inilalabas ng pulis, ginagamit po siya parang ibinebenta po siya. Sabi niya, ‘Mama, nahihirapan na po ako kasi gabi-gabi parang ibinebenta nila ako dito. Nahihirapan na ako mama. Mamamatay na ko dito’,” Cristy’s mother earlier told ABS-CBN News
However, the Consulate has a different story. It stated that Cristy was indeed raped, twice, but not while in detention.
In December 2010, the OFW was first raped by an Iranian whom she met at a party and by a Pakistani who posed as a policeman.
Her money, mobile phone, and camera were taken from her and she was told that she can recover them at the Al-Murqqabat police station.
However, when she arrived at the police station, authorities took her into custody on charges of immorality or unauthorized liaison with the opposite sex, which is strictly prohibited under local laws.
She immediately sought assistance from a friend who is with the local Criminal Investigation Division police and was assisted in identifying and apprehending the Pakistani suspect. The Pakistani is currently in jail on rape charges, while the Iranian suspect is still at large.
During the same Consulate visit, Cristy called up her sister in their presence to clarify matters and inquire why her case was made public.
She also reassured her sister that she was not sexually abused in prison. She also told her sister that she is being treated properly by prison officials and assisted by Consulate officials.
She later learned that it was her mother’s decision to bring her case to the media, hoping that the attention would pave the way for the early resolution of her case.
