Examining Sony's 'Next Generation Portable

MANILA, Philippines – On Thursday, Sony Corp. announced the future release of a new portable gaming device.

Calling it the Next Generation Portable, or NGP, for short, the PSP look-alike is boasting that its the  first-ever 3G-enabled gaming device.

Other things to keep you interested? The user interface is purportedly very similar to the iPhone so expectations would be high as to its user-friendliness.

Its controllers are nothing to sneeze at either; the company claims it’s another first for portable devices, dual analog control sticks. It also features touch sensitive controls on both the front and the back.

Making it even more exciting are the additions of front and rear cameras, motion sensors, social gaming capabilities and the ability to play location-based games. It is also compatible with the PlayStation 3.

But wait. There’s more.

To back up claims that the NGP will be powered by the most advanced, most powerful processors

available on the market, Sony revealed on Friday that it will have two quad-core processors.

Tech-savvy?

…there will be a quad-core ARM Cortex A9 processor inside, and sharing the graphics duties alongside that will be a quad-core Power VR SGX534MP4+ GPU.

Add that to the 5-inch OLED display and the other features and you’ve got yourself a gamers’ dream.

Now, if they could only do something about that name.
